Thursday 25th August: Walking on the Athabasca Glacier

Todays adventure is to travel 102 km along the Icefields Parkway to walk on The Athabasca Glacier.
This is an incredibly beautiful journey with very diverse scenery, from forests to lakes to rivers to arid mountains.
The above is just one scene from this journey

A beautiful "rest area" and time for coffee (we have our thermal flasks, don't leave home without them !) and contemplation

View from The Icefield Visitors Centre.......fabulous

We board our coach to transfer us up to The Ice Explorer

This and next pic taken from The Ice Explorer

We are now walking on the glacier, incredible.
We have now flown over, sailed up to the face of and walked on a glacier

The Ice Explorer

The Athabasca Glacier

This is a hanging glacier, sorry don't remember the name, there are varying forms of glaciers in this area

Tangle Falls and a good spot to stop for our packed lunch on our return back along the Icefield Parkway

First stop of the afternoon is Sunwapta Falls. No hiking to this one as it is conveniently near the main highway. It is amazing so much power. The river is the Athabasca River and flows through a series of waterfalls and canyons and after about 6000 miles will flow into the Artic Ocean. The river is the milky colour of glacial melt

The Athabasca Falls and again conveniently near the main highway although there are some 59 steps down to the lower canyon and of course we have to see everything !!!

Again an incredibly powerful waterfall

The day is complete by another bear-jam.........
We have had a fabulous day.
Alan S we quite agree with you we love Jasper and the surrounding area. We haven't found your bakery yet but that is just as well as we are trying to be good and stay away from temptation.
Ok signing off now as chef is saying the Bison steaks are ready.........
