Wednesday 10th August: Fantastic Orcas

All suited up and ready for our next adventure: today we hope to see Orcas. It's cloudy with a few spit spots of rain and very cold on the water but we have layers and our suits....

Oh wow after an hour and half travelling up north skipping over the waves, A-J our guide/driver of the zodiac gets a call to say there is a pod of orcas up ahead

Fantastic

There are 6 in the pod, 2 of them young calves

This is one of several "local" pods which are monitored and identified by their markings and shape of dorsal fin

We had the good fortune to spend over an hour here drifting back down towards Campbell River and observing these wonderful creatures, we also learnt a lot about them from A-J

Lunch time stop at Port Neville

Port Neville is actually on the mainland and is the nearest point to Vancouver Island. This was a store and post office suppling the logger camps until a new road was constructed from Campbell River to Port Hardy. Lunch time stop and for those of us on the Alaskan Tour in 2009 you will remember the "drop" washrooms !!

The rib/zodiac holds 10/11 people but today a select small group of just us and another very nice couple and their grandson from 100 Mile House near Kamploops

View from Port Neville

View of Port Neville from the zodiac

We return back to watch the orcas for a while before A-J gets a call that dolphins have been spotted farther down the coast. fabulous.... but harder to catch on camera as smaller and a lot more agile !!!

Back to Campbell River and time for a beer sitting in the sunshine on the deck of the hotel at April Point.
Well it has ben a fabulous and fantastic day, one to stay in the memory for some time to come
