Wednesday 3rd August: Vancouver Island

Awake at 5am, well I was ! but no moment time to update journal etc.
Cloudy start but sunny by late morning. We walked for 2 hours around St James' Bay area past Fisherman's Wharf, Ogden Point and Beacon Hill Park

More interesting tree "sculptures"

A sighting of our first bald eagle of this trip

St James' Bay is also the Mile 0 point of Highway 1 which runs right across Canada

Sculpture in Beacon Hill Park

This was interesting, we were making our way back to our hotel for lunch when we come across the Chilian Navy having a march past. They have a training square rigger at Ogden Point and now and then parade through the streets This is the thing with cities there is always something going on..........
The harbour area is certainly very entertaining

The Parliament Building. At night the turrets and roof shape are picked out in strings of lights, very pretty

Interesting topiary

We have had a very good day and a good start to our new adventure. We had heard about a kiosk on the water front that is suppose to have the very best ever fish and chips (roll over Harry Ramsden ??)  so off we go for a big night out but sadly they close at 7pm so we shall never know !!!
Tomorrow we are up and away to Tofino.........
The title of our blog is not quite acurate as so far we haven't seen any whales, bears or mounties but we are optomistic !
