Wednesday 17th August: On the road from Whistler to Clearwater

Up and on the road by 08.30 it's a long drive today and we want to stop at viewpoints along the way as it should be a very scenic drive. Highway 99 runs through Whistler Village so no problem to head north
Our first "stop" is at the railroad crossing just outside of Whistler and we just missed seeing the engine.........

Highway 99 is a single carriageway road that winds up over the mountains. We hit some miles where they have taken off the black top ready to resurface but no problems

For most of the journey the road and the railway run along side of the Cayoosh Creek. This makes us smile as to us a creek is a very small stream !!

The few pics here cannot convey the fantastic/fabulous/awesome journey we had. It was so diverse from deep deep gorges, sheer rock faces, switchbacks, The Cayoosh Creek, and then almost a barren landscape going into a fertile valley through a First Nations Reservation which in some parts reminded us of the landscape in Iceland with totally flat land and steep sides to gorges, obvioulsy caused by ancient glaciers. It is so hard to convey the sights of the wonderful journey we had

Taken while on the move, the "cave" is a railroad tunnel.
Sadly whilst on Highway 97 on the road to 100 Mile House a truck going in the opposite direction flicks up a stone that hits the top corner of the passenger window and cracks the windshield. An expensive case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time !! It is also now raining, ho hum !!
We won't dwell on above, we arrive in Clearwater late afternoon and check into our home for the next 4 days. We have for some reason been given a room in what they call the "workers" end of the hotel but we are quite happy as we have a garden view (the other side has views of the main road) and we have hard wire internet connection not what the receptionist calls flaky wifi !
Clearwater is small but has all we need. It is on the edge of Wells Gray Provincial Park and we shall explore this over the next few days

  1. Great piccies as ever, and strangely you never get enough mountains, creeks, and stunning views. And you have some of the best yet to come.
Glad you are still having fun.
M and I are off to Milan and Lake Como on 2nd Sept, dont know if you will still be away but keep the piccies coming.
    Take care

  2. A second comment because it made me laugh - as you know when you post a comment you have to copy in a word that then fixes to comment, when I posted the comment above what did I have to copy? Mooseride!!! Well you never know, you may get to ride a moose.

  3. You have made us laugh too.....Michaels says as long as it's got a comfy saddle !! Whilst out in the park yesterday we were reading about how the moose first came to Wells Gray Park and it seems it was because of a huge fire in the 1920's, they came to graze on the new shoots and have returned here ever since. In fact Park officials started a deliberate fire in 1960 to ensure an area was the correct habit for them
We are heading up to the top of the Park today to Clearwater Lake, about 60kms from here
Thank you as ever Alan and Maxine for your comments, much appreciated.

  4. Think we may have cracked it. Previous attempts have resulted in a Portuguese version of blogspot with no obvious way to change to english. Now logged in from your page and got the usual portuguese but now has let us change to english so here goes.

On the perfect day looks spectacular but gives Paul the heebie jeebies just looking at the piccies.

Off to UK monday for hopefully our last visit to Kiah. No interweb so out of comment just as we cracked it.

    Love
